Julie Arkell

Last week I was asked about making dolls, and I thought some of you might be interested to hear about a workshop that I went to a couple of years ago in London with a textile artist called Julie Arkell, here are some photos:

Firstly, we made the papier mache dolls.  Then using scraps of material we created the clothes.  Some of the clothes were made by stitching fabric together and some were glued together.

The one that I made is on the far left - some of you might recognise the ears I think I know a sock monster who has ears like this! Here are some more of the things we made:

We also made some brooches from cardboard and scraps of wool:

The flower brooches were stitched together from small pieces of fabric

I hope you've enjoyed looking my photos, if you'd like to find out more about Julie Arkell put her name into google images.  She also has written a book about her work.

Julie sells her dolls all over the world and some of them cost more than £100 each, but if you really like them, I know you can make one just as good yourself  .... have a go!

Well Done - You've All Been So Busy This Week - clay pots, dragons, dragons in pots, aliens, flying saucers, fish, watercolours .........

Every single person has done some fantastic work this week, we started out creating an undersea world, but that very soon led to other things, take a look and you'll see what I mean ....

But just a minute, I thought we were under the sea .....

Oh dear ...  this space ship nearly landed on a clay pot!

Phew!  Just missed it.

Clay pots ... and clay dinosaurs!

What a super cat in a hat!
This pot was carefully made using long coils of clay
Well done everyone - you all really did some super work!

Have a look at this week's work ....

This week we were busy making mobiles, using clay shapes and wire lamp shade bases to hang the shapes from.  We started by painting the bases in bright colours using thick acrylic paint

Next we made a start on painting designs on the clay shapes
that had been made last week and left to dry

Here is some work in progress using gold and black acrylic paint

Collage pieces were added for extra sparkle

Some of the clay shapes ready for stringing together

Arranging shapes before stringing them together

Some of the shapes beautifully painted using black and gold

The Ginger Bread Men and Heart Mobile

Isn't it beautiful ?

Everyone worked so hard this week - brilliant!!
Finally, oh yes, there are more very friendly sock monsters...
What a sweet baby sock monster!

check out their knitted jumpers, that keep them very warm in this rather cold weather ....

Phew! what great work you've all done this week, take care and see you next Saturday

P.S. Many thanks to my proofreader - you know who you are!

Art Box Workshop 22nd January, 2011 - Clay and Lots of Sock Monsters

Hello there, welcome to Art Box Blogspot and find out what we did this week .....

Sock Monsters having a snooze!
This week we tackled some clay projects, lots of drawing and lots and lots and lots of sock monsters - all shapes and sizes - look out for the ears!!

Has this Sock Monster got a name?
Clay pinch pots are a great way to start using clay, all you need is a ball of clay we used New Clay Air Dry.  The size of the pot will depend on the size of the ball of clay that you use.  Make the ball into a nice, smooth round shape.  Next press your thumb into the centre of the ball of clay and carefully  start pressing out the sides of the bowl between your thumb and finger. The sides can be as tall or as shallow as you like.  Finally, scratch a design into the surface of your pot.  Air dry clay can be a bit delicate, so finished pieces will be given a couple of coats of hardener before they are painted.

Clay Pinch Pots

More clay work
Shapes for mobiles
Gingerbread men waiting to be painted!

Well Done Everyone!!!

Next Week ...
As all the clay work is made from 'air dry' clay  next week we will be painting all the things that were made this week (giving the clay chance to dry)  - watch this space to see how they turn out!  The ginger bread men are being made into a colourful hanging mobile.

We will also be finishing off the sock monsters, and maybe even making some more.  As the weather is so cold at the moment I think hats, scarves and socks for our friendly monsters would be a good Idea we also need to think about giving them names.

Of course, we will be doing lots of painting, drawing, sticking and making -  if you want to do some drawing practice check out the blogspot www.drawtoons.blogspot.com

See you then.

Sue
